Tips:
Cover letters are formal business letters that can accompany resumes or job
applications. Each cover letter has two main purposes:
1. To present qualifications related to the specific job requirements and
employer expectations
2. To elicit further consideration from the employer to invite you for an
interview
Employers must be impressed by this initial introduction. This will
determine if the employer reads your resume with serious interest. A resume
sent alone is not an effective way to acquire an interview (some exceptions
are allowed – if an employer requests a resume only or if you are at a job
fair – then a resume only is OK). Tailored cover letters that include a
specific emphasis on skills and experience as they relate to the job you are
applying for are more effective than generic all- purpose cover letters.
Traditional Format
First Paragraph: Why you are writing
In the initial paragraph include the following:
• state the reason for the letter
• name the specific position or type of work for which you are
applying
• indicate how you learned of the opening (i.e. career services,
media, friend)
Second Paragraph: Why you are qualified
Indicate why you are interested in the position and the company. Review the
position description and select two skills that you have that the employer
seeks in a qualified candidate. Devote a paragraph to each skill, spending 5
-6 sentences describing your experience with that skill, proving to the
employer you have what they seek.
If you are a recent graduate, explain how your academic background makes you
a qualified candidate for the position. Highlight your practical work
experience and point out your specific achievements or unique qualifications
. Refer the reader to your enclosed resume, which summarizes your
qualifications, training, and experience. The cover letter should add to
your resume without reiterating the same information.
Third Paragraph: What you want
Indicate your desire for a personal interview. Whenever possible, be
proactive by telling the employer you will follow up in a given period of
time to set up an interview. Thank the employer for taking the time to
consider your application materials.
Cover E-mails
When responding to a job opportunity via e-mail, the cover e-mail follows
the same format as described above with one exception. In the subject line
of the e-mail, put the exact position title for which you are applying.
Start your message with the information described in your second paragraph
above and close with some variation of the third paragraph.

Dear Ms. Smith:
After reviewing your job listing for the Children’s Theatre Assistant that
I found on xxxx website, I am enthusiastically submitting my resume for your
consideration. As a graduating senior at xxxx, I am interested in this position
because it offers me an opportunity to use my theatrical background as well as a
chance to put my skills to work in the children’s theatre industry.
As an intern at The Children’s Theatre Institute in xxx city, I was
able to develop my creative skills in the theatre and learn some of the
intricate techniques that are used on stage. For example, I developed skills
as a production coordinator and oversaw daily business operations.
Additionally, I have spent numerous summers with children as a camp
counselor, which has provided me insight into the interests of children.
These experiences along with my enthusiasm and determination make me a
strong candidate for this position.
I am excited about applying for the Children’s Theatre Assistant position
at Theatre is Fun and would welcome the opportunity to speak with you
further about my qualifications. Please feel free to contact me if you have any
further questions. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to
hearing from you.
Best regards,
