the former Waymo engineer at the heart of the legal battle — Anthony
Levandowski — was in cahoots with Uber when he downloaded 14,000
confidential documents from Waymo. He left Waymo in January 2016 and founded
autonomous trucking startup Otto — but by then, Waymo argued, it was
already understood that Uber would buy the startup to get at those Waymo
trade secrets. Uber’s acquisition of Otto in August was a sham —
Levandowski had been “secretly working” for Uber the whole time, Waymo’s
lawyer said.
The day after Levandowski quit Waymo, according to Verhoeven, Uber granted
him $5 million in company stock — an amount now worth more than $250
