This is the first significant book that I actually finished reading in a
year. In today's crazy political reality (or you can call it farce), reading
late Tony Judt's advocacy for social democracy from the historical
perspective is just refreshing and surreal. He lays out the case for social
democracy which is right now under serious attack around the world. We have
to be constantly reminded that social democracy, many of which we enjoy
daily without paying much attention (social security, medicare, subsidized
public transit, etc) really arises only from a series of circumstances after
the world war II, and therefore requires constant struggle to survive and
flourish.

看到作者把现在和20年代的Lost Generation相提并论,想起今天同事还说现在就跟六
七十年代的红色年代一样。
