*Features of Pediatrics
Feeling of Achievement: many disease are curable, the patients are young:
promising
Chronic Pathology is rare
Income: below average, but still you can make big money if you want
Not very complicated: pathology, medication
Malpractice Insurance: low
*Residency
Relative friendly environment
Personal statement: very important, interest in the specialty
Observership: general Pediatrics is preferred
Relative easier: not demanding like surgery
*Structure of Residency Training
1st Year: rotation: floor, NICU, clinic, research
2nd Year: PICU, subspecialties: general, neph, cardi, endo, hemo, psych
3rd year: inpatient (in-charge: mental challenge instead of physical
challenge), research, elective
*Fellow Application
Time: Most at 2nd year
Specialty: neph, cardiology (most profitable, most liability), endo, hemo,
psych, genetics, allergy
CMGs have advantage due to research background
*Interview
Tufts: Step 1 and 2 >= 95, within 5 years of graduation
Location: big city (such as Boston and San Francisco) are relative
competitive
Academic is more competitive than community (no doubt)
*Match
7-8 interviews: 90% possibility
4-5 interviews: 50% possibility
*Questions
1. I have observerships from IM and Ped, May I apply for Ped?
Ans: Yes. No conflict between Ped and IM. You may event tell the
interviewers that you like Ped more after both of the observorships.
2. The kids are crying in the office, is it annoying?
Ans: You are going to tolerate it very soon. Every specialty has similar but
