I am Chinese and was raised in Hong Kong, now living in LA and have always
been a fan of Jimmy Kimmel. Honestly, I think he is one of the more PC hosts
out there and I can easily see that it was a joke (that didn't even come
from his own mouth). His questions don't encourage the joke any more than
how a reporter would question a radical on their views. I understand why
people might be upset, but I honestly think we may have blown this out of
proportion here. If there's anything we should be paying attention to, it's
the parents of those children and the state of the society we live in that
causes even children to think this way.

Can you imaging the reaction there would have been, had someone made a simil
ar "joke" about killing Jews?
Obviously most US citizens see Jewish lives as much more important than Chin
ese lives.
But why should Chinese tolerate this? And why should anyone else let them ge
t away with this?

in comedy.
so apparently ,this doesn't means the Jewish life is more valuable than
Chinese or Whites
It has something to do with their tragic history.

During the Oct. 16 segment of his show, Mr. Kimmel's question,
"Should we allow the Chinese to live?", with its word "allow", carries with
it the assumption that people of Chinese descent have no right to their own
lives, and that rather, "we" have the right to kill or not kill them all as
we decide. He suggested to the children on the show that maybe the idea is
impractical, but refused to give even the smallest hint of the fact that to
"kill everyone in China" is, precisely and exactly, genocide.
And Kimmel's "apology" was vague to the extreme, with no specific reference
to the actual incident. It was nothing more than a statement of "LOL sorry
if I hurt your precious little feelings why are you sensitive". I fail to
see how this is an apology in any meaningful sense of the word.
And frankly, I am sick and tired of the kind of comments telling the Chinese
American community to "get a sense of humour". This is the standard excuse
of racists and bullies when they get called on their words and actions.
People of Chinese and other Asian descent have suffered from a long history
of racial violence, ostracism, and outright discriminatory policies in
America (google "anti-Chinese riots", google "Chinese Exclusion Act", google
"alien land laws"). Racism, discrimination, harassment and hate crimes
remain a fact of life today for millions of people of Chinese heritage in
America.
So, to those who say that the Chinese community is "blowing this out of
proportion": you do NOT get to tell people of a minority group how to react
to racism and hate speech. When epithets like "chink" and "slant-eyes" are
being hurled regularly on American streets, you do NOT get to tell people
that they're "over-sensitive". When Chinese American kids face far higher
risk from bullying compared to the general population, you do NOT get to
tell people to "lighten up". When genocide against an entire group is
discussed on American mainstream media as something morally acceptable, you
do NOT get to tell people it is "entertainment" and "all in good fun". Take
you attitudes of white privilege and shove them where they belong. |
