Tommy Tuberville has left Texas Tech to become the new coach at Cincinnati.
He will replace Butch Jones, who accepted the head coaching job at Tennessee
on Friday. Cincinnati called a 6:30 p.m. ET news conference to introduce
Tuberville.
A Texas Tech official said the school was "completely blindsided" by the
decision.
Tuberville was 20-17 in three seasons at Texas Tech, going 7-5 this season
to reach the Meineke Car Care Bowl vs. Minnesota. The Red Raiders started
the season 6-1 but lost four of their final five games.
The 58-year-old has a career record of 130-77.
Before signing on with Texas Tech to replace Mike Leach, Tuberville coached
10 years at Auburn and four at Ole Miss, engineering an undefeated season at
Auburn in 2004.
Tuberville's move comes after he began the season amid speculation that his
job status was tenuous after a 5-7 season in 2011, the first losing season
in nearly 20 years at Texas Tech.
He worked with Cincinnati athletic director Whit Babcock when both were at
Auburn.
Tuberville was also involved in an incident earlier this season with
graduate assistant Kevin Oliver. He ripped Oliver's headset off his head on
the sideline, prompting false reports that he had struck the coach.
Tuberville was reprimanded by the Big 12 but faced no further punishment. | b*********n
