Shares of SolarCity (SCTY) and Tesla (TSLA) both closed up more than 3% in
regular trading Wednesday.
SolarCity has recently started trading in tandem with Tesla; Tesla CEO Elon
Musk is SolarCity’s chairman, and SolarCity’s CEO Lyndon Rive is Musk’s
cousin.
In addition, Bloomberg reports today that SolarCity is testing 8 kilowatt-
hour battery packs provided by Tesla, in its bid to reduce its dependency on
utilities.
SolarCity is now tied to utilities, as it sells power to them during the day
, and the utilities later provide that power consumers at night, when demand
is greater. Within two years, the company is hoping to introduce a package
that includes both solar panels to capture the sun’s energy during the day
and batteries that can store energy, so consumers can use it at night.
