行或因果关系也并未废去,反而得以确立(徒2:23;太17:12;徒4:27-28;约19:11;
箴16:33)。
二.虽然上帝预知在各种可能出现的条件下所能发生的一切(徒15:18;撒上23:11,12;
、殷勤做工的根据,并使他们得着丰富的慰籍(罗11:5-6,20;彼后1:10;罗8:33;
路10:20)。

CHAPTER 3
OF GOD'S ETERNAL DECREE
1. God, from all eternity, did, by the most wise and holy counsel of his own
will, freely, and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass: yet so, as
thereby neither is God the author of sin, nor is violence offered to the wil
l of the creatures; nor is the liberty or contingency of second causes taken
away, but rather established.
2. Although God knows whatsoever may or can come to pass upon all supposed c
onditions, yet hath he not decreed anything because he foresaw it as future,
or as that which would come to pass upon such conditions.
3. By the decree of God, for the manifestation of his glory, some men and an
gels are predestinated unto everlasting life; and others foreordained to eve
rlasting death.
4. These angels and men, thus predestinated, and foreordained, are particula
rly and unchangeably designed, and their number so certain and definite, tha
t it cannot be either increased or diminished.
5. Those of mankind that are predestinated unto life, God, before the founda
tion of the world was laid, according to his eternal and immutable purpose,
and the secret counsel and good pleasure of his will, hath chosen, in Christ
, unto everlasting glory, out of his mere free grace and love, without any f
oresight of faith, or good works, or perseverance in either of them, or any
other thing in the creature, as conditions, or causes moving him thereunto;
and all to the praise of his glorious grace.
6. As God hath appointed the elect unto glory, so hath he, by the eternal an
d most free purpose of his will, foreordained all the means thereunto. Where
fore, they who are elected, being fallen in Adam, are redeemed by Christ, ar
e effectually called unto faith in Christ by his Spirit working in due seaso
n, are justified, adopted, sanctified, and kept by his power, through faith,
unto salvation. Neither are any other redeemed by Christ, effectually calle
d, justified, adopted, sanctified, and saved, but the elect only.
7. The rest of mankind God was pleased, according to the unsearchable counse
l of his own will, whereby he extendeth or withholdeth mercy, as he pleaseth
, for the glory of his sovereign power over his creatures, to pass by; and t
o ordain them to dishonor and wrath for their sin, to the praise of his glor
ious justice.
8. The doctrine of this high mystery of predestination is to be handled with
special prudence and care, that men, attending the will of God revealed in
his Word, and yielding obedience thereunto, may, from the certainty of their
effectual vocation, be assured of their eternal election. So shall this doc
trine afford matter of praise, reverence, and admiration of God; and of humi
lity, diligence, and abundant consolation to all that sincerely obey the gos
pel.

CHAPTER III
Of God’s Eternal Decree
I. God, from all eternity, did, by the most wise and holy counsel of his own
will, freely, and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass:[65] yet so,
as thereby neither is God the author of sin,[66] nor is violence offered to
the will of the creatures; nor is the liberty or contingency of second caus
es taken away, but rather established.[67]
II. Although God knows whatsoever may or can come to pass upon all supposed
conditions,[68] yet hath he not decreed anything because he foresaw it as fu
ture, or as that which would come to pass upon such conditions.[69]
III. By the decree of God, for the manifestation of his glory, some men and
angels[70] are predestinated unto everlasting life; and others foreordained
to everlasting death.[71]
IV. These angels and men, thus predestinated, and foreordained, are particul
arly and unchangeably designed, and their number so certain and definite, th
at it cannot be either increased or diminished.[72]
V. Those of mankind that are predestinated unto life, God, before the founda
tion of the world was laid, according to his eternal and immutable purpose,
and the secret counsel and good pleasure of his will, hath chosen, in Christ
, unto everlasting glory,[73] out of his mere free grace and love, without a
ny foresight of faith, or good works, or perseverance in either of them, or
any other thing in the creature, as conditions, or causes moving him thereun
to;[74] and all to the praise of his glorious grace.[75]
VI. As God hath appointed the elect unto glory, so hath he, by the eternal a
nd most free purpose of his will, foreordained all the means thereunto.[76]
Wherefore, they who are elected, being fallen in Adam, are redeemed by Chris
t,[77] are effectually called unto faith in Christ by his Spirit working in
due season, are justified, adopted, sanctified,[78] and kept by his power, t
hrough faith, unto salvation.[79] Neither are any other redeemed by Christ,
effectually called, justified, adopted, sanctified, and saved, but the elect
only.[80]
VII. The rest of mankind God was pleased, according to the unsearchable coun
sel of his own will, whereby he extendeth or withholdeth mercy, as he please
th, for the glory of his sovereign power over his creatures, to pass by; and
to ordain them to dishonor and wrath for their sin, to the praise of his gl
orious justice.[81]
VIII. The doctrine of this high mystery of predestination is to be handled w
ith special prudence and care,[82] that men, attending the will of God revea
led in his Word, and yielding obedience thereunto, may, from the certainty o
f their effectual vocation, be assured of their eternal election.[83] So sha
ll this doctrine afford matter of praise, reverence, and admiration of God;[
84] and of humility, diligence, and abundant consolation to all that sincere
ly obey the gospel.[85]
[63] John 1:14, 18. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we
beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of
grace and truth.... No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son
, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

he hardeneth.
[66] James 1:13, 17. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God:
for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man. Every goo
d gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father
of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 1 John
1:5. This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto y

seech thee, tell thy servant. And the LORD said, He will come down. Then sai
d David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?
And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up. Matthew 11:21, 23. Woe unto t
hee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were
done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long
ago in sackcloth and ashes.... And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto
heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have b
een done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this
day.
[69] Romans 9:11, 13, 16, 18. (For the children being not yet born, neither
having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election

ight show my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout al
l the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he
will he hardeneth.... Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same
lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? What if God
, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much
longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction. 2 Timothy 2:19-20.
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lor
d knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Chri
st depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only vessels of
gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and s
ome to dishonour. Jude 4. For there are certain men crept in unawares, who w

God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! Deut

made us accepted in the beloved. Romans 11:33. O the depth of the riches bo
th of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, a
nd his ways past finding out!
[85] Romans 11:5-6, 20. Even so then at this present time also there is a re
mnant according to the election of grace. And if by grace, then is it no mor
e of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is
it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.... For when ye were the s
ervants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 2 Peter 1:10. Wherefore the
rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: fo
r if ye do these things, ye shall never fall. Romans 8:33. Who shall lay any
thing to the charge of God?s elect? It is God that justifieth. Luke 10:20.
Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you;
but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
