CHAPTER XXVI
Of the Communion of Saints
I. All saints, that are united to Jesus Christ their Head, by his Spirit, an
d by faith, have fellowship with him in his graces, sufferings, death, resur
rection, and glory:[504] and, being united to one another in love, they have
communion in each other’s gifts and graces,[505] and are obliged to the pe
rformance of such duties, public and private, as do conduce to their mutual
good, both in the inward and outward man.[506]
II. Saints by profession are bound to maintain an holy fellowship and commun
ion in the worship of God, and in performing such other spiritual services a
s tend to their mutual edification;[507] as also in relieving each other in
outward things, according to their several abilities and necessities. Which
communion, as God offereth opportunity, is to be extended unto all those who
, in every place, call upon the name of the Lord Jesus.[508]
III. This communion which the saints have with Christ, doth not make them in
any wise partakers of the substance of his Godhead; or to be equal with Chr
ist in any respect: either of which to affirm is impious and blasphemous.[50
9] Nor doth their communion one with another, as saints, take away, or infri
nge the title or propriety which each man hath in his goods and possessions.
[510]
[504] 1 John 1:3. That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, tha
t ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the
Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. Ephesians 3:16-19. That he would gran
t you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might b
y his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith
; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with
all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to k
now the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled wit
h all the fulness of God. John 1:16. And of his fulness have all we received
, and grace for grace. Ephesians 2:5-6. Even when we were dead in sins, hath
quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised
us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus
. Philippians 3:10. That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection,
and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.
Romans 6:5-6. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his d
eath, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, th
at our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroye
d, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 2 Timothy 2:12. If we suffer, we
shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us.
[505] Ephesians 4:15-16. But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into hi
m in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fi
tly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, accor
ding to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase
of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. 1 Corinthians 12:7. But the
manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 1 Corin
thians 3:21-23. Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours;
Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or th
ings present, or things to come; all are yours; And ye are Christ?s; and Chr
ist is God?s. Colossians 2:19. And not holding the Head, from which all the
body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, i
ncreaseth with the increase of God.
[506] 1 Thessalonians 5:11, 14. Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and e
dify one another, even as also ye do. Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them
that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient tow
ard all men. Romans 1:11-12, 14. For I long to see you, that I may impart un
to you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; That is, that
I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.
... I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise,
and to the unwise. 1 John 3:16-18. Hereby perceive we the love of God, beca
use he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the
brethren. But whoso hath this world?s good, and seeth his brother have need
, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love o
f God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue
; but in deed and in truth. Galatians 6:10. As we have therefore opportunity
, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household
of faith.
[507] Hebrews 10:24-25. And let us consider one another to provoke unto love
and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as t
he manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye
see the day approaching. Acts 2:42, 46. And they continued stedfastly in th
e apostles? doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayer
s.... And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking
bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness
of heart. Isaiah 2:3. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us
go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he
will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion sh
all go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 1 Corinthians
11:20. When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat t
he Lord?s supper.
[508] Acts 2:44-45. And all that believed were together, and had all things
common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as
every man had need. 1 John 3:17. But whoso hath this world?s good, and seet
h his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him,
how dwelleth the love of God in him? 2 Corinthians 8-9. Acts 11:29-30. Then
the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief
unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea: Which also they did, and sent it t
o the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
[509] Colossians 1:18-19. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is
the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might hav
e the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness
dwell. 1 Corinthians 8:6. But to us there is but one God, the Father, of who
m are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all
things, and we by him. Isaiah 42:8. I am the LORD: that is my name: and my g
lory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. 1 Timot
hy 6:15-16. Which in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Po
tentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dw
elling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, n
or can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. Psalm 45:7. Thou
lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath an
ointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Hebrews 1:8-9. But u
nto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of
righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness,
and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the
oil of gladness above thy fellows.
[510] Exodus 20:15. Thou shalt not steal. Ephesians 4:28. Let him that stole
steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing
which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Acts 5:4. While
s it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in th
ine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast
not lied unto men, but unto God.
