一．圣礼是恩典之约的圣洁标记和印证（罗4:11;创17:7，10），由上帝亲自设立
（太28:19；林前11:23），代表基督及其恩惠，并证实我们与祂有分（林前10:16；11:
25－26；加3:17）；圣礼也将属教会的人与世上其他的人明显划分（罗15:8；出12:48；
创34:14），并严肃地要求他们在基督里照着上帝的圣言服事祂（罗6:3-4；林前10:16，
21）。
二．在每一圣礼中，在标记和其所表征者之间，都有一种属灵的关系，或圣礼上的联合
；因此，二者名称和功效可以彼此相归（创17:10；太26:27－28；多3:5）。
三．在施行得宜的圣礼中，藉此圣礼所展示的恩典，并不是由圣礼本身的什么权能赋
与的；圣礼的功效也不依赖施行者的虔诚或心意（罗2:28-29；彼前3:21），而是依赖圣
灵的运行（太3:11；林前12:13）和设立圣礼的道，因为这道不仅吩咐人举行圣礼，而且
应许赐恩惠给配领受的人（太26:27，28；28:19－20）。
四．我们的主基督在福音中所设立的圣礼只有两个，即洗礼和圣餐：它们除由合乎圣
经按立的牧师施行以外，任何人不得施行（太28:19；林前11:20，23；4:1；来5:4）。
五．旧约的圣礼对属灵之事所表征的，在实质上是与新约的圣礼所表征的相同（林前10

Of the Sacraments
I. Sacraments are holy signs and seals of the covenant of grace,[511] immedi
ately instituted by God,[512] to represent Christ, and his benefits; and to
confirm our interest in him:[513] as also, to put a visible difference betwe
en those that belong unto the church, and the rest of the world;[514] and so
lemnly to engage them to the service of God in Christ, according to his Word
.[515]
II. There is, in every sacrament, a spiritual relation, or sacramental union
, between the sign and the thing signified: whence it comes to pass, that th
e names and effects of the one are attributed to the other.[516]
III. The grace which is exhibited in or by the sacraments rightly used, is n
ot conferred by any power in them; neither doth the efficacy of a sacrament
depend upon the piety or intention of him that doth administer it:[517] but
upon the work of the Spirit,[518] and the word of institution, which contain
s, together with a precept authorizing the use thereof, a promise of benefit
to worthy receivers.[519]
IV. There be only two sacraments ordained by Christ our Lord in the Gospel;
that is to say, baptism, and the Supper of the Lord: neither of which may be
dispensed by any, but by a minister of the Word lawfully ordained.[520]
V. The sacraments of the old testament, in regard of the spiritual things th
ereby signified and exhibited, were, for substance, the same with those of t
he new.[521]
[511] Romans 4:11. And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the r
ighteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he migh
t be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; th
at righteousness might be imputed unto them also. Genesis 17:7, 10. And I wi
ll establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in thei
r generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy
seed after thee. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and y
ou and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.
[512] Matthew 28:19. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them
in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. 1 Corinthi
ans 11:23. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto
you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread.
[513] 1 Corinthians 10:16. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the
communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the c
ommunion of the body of Christ? 1 Corinthians 11:25-26. After the same manne
r also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new test
ament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord?s
death till he come. Galatians 3:17. And this I say, that the covenant, that
was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and
thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none
effect.
[514] Romans 15:8. Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumc
ision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers. E
xodus 12:48. And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the
passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him com
e near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no
uncircumcised person shall eat thereof. Genesis 34:14. And they said unto th
em, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised
; for that were a reproach unto us.
[515] Romans 6:3-4. Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Je
sus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by
baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the
glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 1 Corin
thians 10:16, 21. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communio
n of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion
of the body of Christ?... Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup o
f devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord?s table, and of the table of de
vils.
[516] Genesis 17:10. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me an
d you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcise
d. Matthew 26:27-28. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to th
em, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, w
hich is shed for many for the remission of sins. Titus 3:5. Not by works of
righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by
the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.
[517] Romans 2:28-29. For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither i
s that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which i
s one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and no
t in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. 1 Peter 3:21. The l
ike figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting awa
y of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,
) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
[518] Matthew 3:11. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he
that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear
13. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews
or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink int
o one Spirit.
[519] Matthew 26:27-28. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to
them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament
, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Matthew 28:19-20. Go ye
therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things w
hatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the
end of the world. Amen.

ans 11:20, 23. When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not t
o eat the Lord?s supper.... For I have received of the Lord that which also

rayed took bread. 1 Corinthians 4:1. Let a man so account of us, as of the m
inisters of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Hebrews 5:4. And n
o man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was
Aaron.

e ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed th
rough the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritu
al drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that
