Of the ten words making up the acronym TULIP, four (total, depravity, uncond
itional and irresistible) are not even found in the Bible and two (limited a
nd perseverance) are each found only once. As for the phrases expressed by e
ach letter (Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irre
sistible Grace and Perseverance of the Saints), none of them appears anywher
e from the beginning of Genesis to the end of Revelation! We have, therefore
, good cause to be at least cautious in approaching these key Calvinist conc
epts. The burden is upon their promoters to show that these ideas, in spite
of their absence from Scripture, are indeed taught there.
More than the spelling of the word TULIP gives the doctrine of Total Depravi
ty its first place. Calvinism offers a special definition of human depravity
both Unconditional Election and Irresistible Grace. As the Canons of Dort d
eclare, "Therefore all men ... without the regenerating grace of the Holy Sp
irit ... are neither able nor willing to return to God . . . nor to dispose
themselves to reformation."1 That statement is an expression of human opinio
n without biblical support.
It is, in fact, unreasonable to say that a person is unwilling to do what he
is unable to do. There is no way either to prove or to disprove the stateme
nt.
How can it be said, for example, that a man is unwilling to fly like a bird?
If he were able he might very well be willing. One thing is sure: his alleg
ed unwillingness to fly like a bird cannot be blamed as the reason he doesn'
t do so. Nor can he be held accountable for failing to fly so long as flying
is impossible for him. Yet Calvinism is guilty of both absurdity and injust
ice by declaring man to be incapable of repentance and faith, then condemnin
g him for failing to repent and believe. | D******r
