WASHINGTON—The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits
rose to the highest level in four months last week, sending an uncertain
post-holiday signal on a labor market coming off of its best year in more
than a decade.
Initial jobless claims increased 19,000 to a seasonally adjusted 316,000 in
the week ended Jan. 10, the Labor Department said Thursday, matching the
highest level since the week ending Sept. 6. Economists surveyed by The Wall
Street Journal had expected 295,000 new claims.
“This latest reading is one of the highest figures reported over the past
half year and it is difficult to know at this point if this represents noise
in the weekly series—which is often very volatile around the turn of the
year—or a more meaningful softening in labor market conditions,” Daniel
Silver, economist at J.P. Morgan Chase, said in a note to clients.
The four-week moving average for initial claims, which evens out weekly
volatility, rose 6,750 to 298,000. Thursday’s report also showed the number
of people filing continuing claims for unemployment benefits fell 51,000 to
2.4 million for the week ended Jan 3.
Claims, a proxy for layoffs, slipped below 300,000 in July and had
consistently, if not uniformly, registered below that level until last week.
The last time with a similar extended run was in 2000.
It isn’t clear if last week’s bump is because the labor market is truly
softening or if technical factors are at work. Layoffs typically spike in
January when companies dismiss holiday workers. The Labor Department tries
to account for that with seasonal adjustments but doesn’t always fully
capture volatile swings.
“We attribute the spike to the seasonal adjustment process,” said Jesse
Hurwitz, economist at Barclays Bank. “We expect initial and continuing
claims to resume their downward trend in the coming weeks and reflect
broader improvement in labor markets.”
Last year, companies hired new workers at a healthy pace. The 2.95 million
jobs added in 2014 marked the biggest calendar-year increase since the
figure topped three million in 1999. And nonfarm payrolls finished the year
on a relatively strong note as employers added a seasonally adjusted 252,000
jobs in December.
Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said next week
’s claims figures will again be affected by seasonal factors and may not
offer a clearer signal of the labor market’s direction.
“The seasonals look even more odd next week, so an immediate reversal of
this increase is not a done deal; claims could easily be reported even
higher,” Mr. Shepardson said.
