Another big problem that will result from free college for everyone is the
problem with scarcity. A college degree used to be highly valuable and a
pathway to higher paying management and executive careers. Now, it has about
the same value as a high school diploma did in 1980. The larger the number
of people with college degrees, the less special they are. There are many
jobs on the market now that require a college degree for applicants to be
considered, but would have only required a high school diploma just a few
decades ago.
Education is good, but the push for college for everyone as some kind of
right or benefit of citizenry is actually hurting our job market, not
helping it. We have pushed young people away from trades and towards
academics, when that pathway may not really be what's right for them or even
what they want/enjoy.
College is a good thing for a lot of people, but in the last two decades it
has become too political. Colleges don't care about or help students
understand their debt exposure ... which is part of the reason why student
loans are so burdensome. Kids can get $100k to study social ecology and art
history, when everyone knows full well there are no jobs waiting for them
that will pay enough to subsidize their loan repayment. The students bear
responsibility for their own circumstances ... that shouldn't be diminished
... but the colleges and universities take advantage of the fact they are
young and inexperienced and don't blink that the debt they are saddling
these kids with.
College culture is, as it has always been, troublesome. What used to be the
anomaly ... think "Animal House" ... is fast becoming the expectation. Kids
go to college, get tattooed and pierced, drink and drug, and protest
everything ... and leave even dumber than they arrived. There are no
behavioral standards. Alcohol is everywhere. Under-age drinking is chastised
but not really dealt with. The reputation as a party school is actually, I
think, preferred by many institutions because it serves as great marketing
to draw students in ... who will be on financial aid and drag out their
college experience for 6 or 7 years, all the while generating revenue for
the school, who doesn't care how much debt those students rack up in the
process.
The biggest problem facing college graduates now is the direct result of
traditional supply and demand logic. There are too many graduates entering a
job market that does not have management or executive roles for them, and
they aren't making what they thought would. Debt is harder to pay back.
Advancement is harder to achieve. Now people are having to obtain graduate
degrees to have similar opportunities to what a bachelor degree offered 20
or 30 years ago.
There are some degree exceptions ... like certain tech and skill degrees (
engineering, nursing, etc.) that funnel directly into an occupational window
, but those are temporary windows that will open and close over time. People
getting into electrical engineering programs now are entering their
training at a time when that seems like a great industry to work in (from an
opportunity perspective), but there are three to five graduating classes
ahead of them that see the same job market and will enter it before them.
Those opportunities may look very different in four or five years, and may
not be as available.

教育本身并不能解决劳动力市场的问题，更多的像是被政客拿来迷惑大众的一种“政治
正确”符号。
只有保持quality的教育，能够甄别真正有能力的人并加以培养的时候，教育本身的价
值才能得到社会的认同。 |

，二是本科毕业啥都干不了。

That is very funny about that "free" college education. Clinton has not read
the latest (August 2016) Consumer Report magazine apparently. Front cover:
42 million people owe $1.3 trillion in student debt and "I kind of ruined my
life by going to college".
The price is not going to go down and kids are not counseled enough before
making choices about loans and schools. These prices have quadrupled in
Obama's term; give me a break! And who will pay for the "free" education
even if it is at a state or city college? The taxpayer that has worked hard
all his/her life, earned a degree, and made something of themselves to
command a better salary. That is WHO. |

率，不得不一直降低考试要求
还有一些白痴的学生，要让他们过的话，只能搞平均主义了。

每年毕业的学生起码fail掉2/3就差不多了

二是现在评审标准全面量化，学生多才好灌水，所以扯蛋的多，真正搞有意义问题的少
前一阵才有大牛公开批评俺们领域现在是driven by what can be done, not what
needs to be done...
