If your soil needs to be more acidic, sulfur may be used to lower the pH if
it is available. To reduce the soil pH by 1.0 point, mix in 1.2 oz of ground
rock sulfur per square yard if the soil is sandy, or 3.6 oz per square yard
for all other soils. The sulfur should be thoroughly mixed into the soil
before planting. Sawdust, composted leaves, wood chips, cottonseed meal,
leaf mold and especially peat moss, will lower the soil pH. |

吃，今年老妈就说还要种，让买点土和肥，去年是安邻居家买的四包top soil四包牛粪
，今年我自己去买的，发现top soil上写的是ideal for filling holes和提高地面用
，我就买了garden soil和牛粪，garden soil上写的是bigger and brighter flowers
and vegetables。 买回来打开老妈偏说我买错了，原来的top soil看上去就是土，这
个garden soil里面好像还有一些经过腐烂的小树皮什么的，但是明明人家写的是种花
种菜的阿，我妈说garden soil没粘性根站不住，我就觉得怪了，难道不该安说明买？

soil/cow manure 各1/3, 胡乱混在一起就种了
你一开始就全部用很贵的garden soil的话，暂时可以不加许多肥 许多粪～～～
表土是top soil是不是，周末看了一下这个颜色好像比garden soil浅，garden oil好
黑，，如果garden bed里全部用garden soil的话，牛粪马粪鸡粪是一块放还是选一种
呀？还要再加compost吗？定期只加flower and vegetable plant food行吗？一定要每
种菜弄一种a-b-c那种不同数字的肥吗？

highly recommend that you do soil test through some reputable labs like
Logan Labs or UMASS soil testing lab (the latter only charges $15 for a
basic test + organic matter at the moment). Then you'll be very confident
as what need to be added to your soil. Home testing kit may not be that
accurate, and if you haven't used distilled water, your pH value is
meaningless.

seed 过草先。
你干嘛不说说铺那层 top soil, 你如何能保证那层 top soil 里面是干净的，
没有其他杂草和除草剂？麦杆子里面带其种子也不是什么新鲜事。
很多人载在这个 top soil 不够干净上面，而且超过几千尺的地铺 top
soil 根本就是不现实的。
什么选择都是有利和弊的，我只过指出，top soil 这个真的不是必须的。
没有 top soil 就减少被污染的机会。
发芽率低这个也不是真的，我种过，发芽率接近 100%。正确浇水就
可以了。

你浇水不倒位就容易造成只有杂草能发芽。
你去算过如果要铺 1000 seq ft 的 top soil 需要多少土吗？
如果要覆盖1/4 inch 的 top soil. 你要搬运差不多 1000/4/12 = 27.8 cubic foot.
一个 40 lbs 的 top soil 是大概 1/2 cubic foot。 你要差不多 54 包。
重量 1 ton 左右。

打算种在盆里，买了陶土的花盆
今天跑去home depot买了：Miracle-Gro的All-purpose plant food，还搬回一大袋Gardening Soil,也是这个牌子的
plant food怎么用，上面写的挺明白的；但是发现，Gardening Soil上面居然写着“not for container”?! 是说明这个土不是给盆栽植物用的吗？
我的问题是：
1.Gardening Soil是不能用于盆栽吗？
2.如果不能，为什么？
上面写的要与local soil按1：1比例混合后使用，如果我混了放在盆子里面，可以凑合用吗？
3.是不是用了Gardening Soil，其实就不用再施plant food? 是不是plant food就是给只用local soil的植物用的？
p.s.主要想知道如果土真的买错了，怎么补救...希望不用退回去了，好大好大袋拼死命才弄回来的啊...tears...谢谢前辈们了... |

by the end of the summer you feel like the grass in the backyard isn't that
bad, you can choose to do an overseeding in the fall. If there are a lot of
weeds and you don't like them, you can choose to do a renovation. For
overseeding, you may spend more time dealing with weeds before and
afterwards though.

为十么我认为你那快不要用edge呢? 是草地和driveway的界. edge的做用主要是分草地
和mulch或分
草地和soil. driveway的水泥或力青本身就起到了个edge的做用, 你再加从功能上讲是
浪费. 不过很好看.
如果是driveway和mulch的界, driveway和soil的界, 也可以用edge. edge本身是主要为
了保护里面的mulch和soil,
次要的是防止草长进去. 如果mulch和soil有坡度和高度, 可以做retaining wall.
而你那块地是没有任何mulch和soil的. 所以从功能上讲不是很需要edging. |

了解你的 soil 有多肥沃，才 $20 非常值得的。不然你永远只能是猜。
你随便买错袋化肥就浪费不止这个价钱了。你叫 Gardener 帮你做这样的
test 就要 $100。然后你可以吧结果 post 到 bestlawn soil 板，听听
土神解释你的土壤就不止 $30 价值了。
做 soil test 是有百利无一害的东西。而且就是做了 soil test 你才会
知道纯粹的化肥对土壤的伤害有多大，才少用 weed & feed 这样的东西。
而且你说的打孔铺沙这些都是我觉得都是非常错的。白浪费钱，还不止这个
价。如果打孔很有用的话，为什么商业的高尔夫球场不用？人家才是有的
是钱，非常关心草的健康，什么器材都买得起的主。 |

think your gardener knows about gardening unless you misunderstood him.
Top soil is perfect soil for leveling uneven lawn.
Once you fill the hole with top soil, always add 1 inch more because after a
few month water the soil will become more compact.

- You need to dig up the soil to get rid of the grass roots.
- If your soil bed is at the ground level, make sure to raise up the soil
bed by 6-8inches for veges. If the soil is made up of too much clay, you
need to improve the soil by getting some sandy stuff to mix.
- Also, make sure your trees don't block much of the sunlight.
- Buy some intro books on veges, your local library may have them. Eg:

硬，看见车库里有包garden soil，心想正好，把soil倒到地里，和地里原来的土混了
混，心想这下够肥了。又费了半天劲，撒上了黄瓜籽和青菜籽。浇水时发现水下渗明显
比另一块菜地慢，手捏了捏土也觉得偏重偏粘。怎么会呢？我用的garden soil啊！然
后转头看见袋子上写着：Garden soil，for trees and shrubs.
郁闷了，难怪土的质地不同。不知这个garden soil for vegetables 和 for shrub
and trees有多大区别. 我能感觉到的就是种菜用的土更臭，更松，而给树用的更结更
粘一些，也没啥气味。
请问大家如何补救？
反正也种了，将错就错？
或是往里掺点啥东西再重新撒籽？如果只是改善排水，是不是可以掺点perlite？这个
能给蔬菜用吗？
还是把土全挖出来重来？

chemicals degrade over time and it shouldn't be that much of a concern after
a while (I don't know how long though), but what's more dangerous is heavy
metals, for which you need to do a formal soil test from some reputable soil
test labs (for example the UMass soil test lab). Make sure you ask them to
check heavy metals.
An alternative is to plant on raised beds which you make yourself from known

然后lawn soil没有了，就用top soil垫底，撒草种
最后top soil也没有了，就在原来的硬土地上撒草种
我发现，lawn soil上的草种长得最茂盛
在原来的硬土地上的草种长得最慢
所以还是要先铺一层浅浅的好土，再撒草种 |

到了这里，需要买土来种菜。到农资公司一看，好的很，有各种各样的土：garden

。打开一开，多是些木屑类的，连沙子都很少。
买top soil吧！也是差不多，没有什么土，多是些乱78糟的东西。
