Systems(一家3D打印技术公司),并出任新公司的首席战略官。

Chinese cast doubt over executive's rags to riches tale
Tania Branigan in Beijing and Ed Pilkington in New York
guardian.co.uk, Monday 4 February 2013 18.47 EST
Her story is an incredible tale of triumph over tragedy: a tormented
childhood during China's cultural revolution, detention and forced exile
after exposing female infanticide – then glittering success as the head of
a major US technology firm.
"It sounds too unbelievable for fiction, but this is the true story of a
life in two worlds," enthuses the website for Ping Fu's autobiography, Bend
Not Break. In one interview to promote the book, the entrepreneur boasted
that Michelle Obama had invited her back to the White House for a nightcap
after the 2010 State of the Union address.
But after Chinese readers flagged up a series of inconsistencies and
improbabilities in interviews she has given, Fu has been forced to defend
her book from accusations that some of it is not true.
Fu, the president, chief executive and cofounder of the 3D software company
Geomagic, has said she is "shocked, heartbroken and deeply saddened" by what
she considers a smear campaign that "reveals the dark side of human cruelty
" and "makes me relive the emotional abuse of my childhood".
Many of the questions centre on the 54-year-old's horrifying account of
being wrenched from her parents when the cultural revolution started in 1966
, and sent to a re-education camp where she was gang-raped at the age of 10.
An estimated 36 million people were persecuted during the turmoil and
numerous families torn apart. But sceptics, including Fang Zhouzi, an
influential blogger who scrutinises Chinese academia, say much of Fu's story
does not ring true.
Fu has now acknowledged that her account of a brutal execution by Red Guards
in which they killed a teacher by using four horses to tear her apart was
an "emotional memory" and probably wrong. Pressed by critics, Fu wrote in
the Huffington Post: "To this day, in my mind, I think I saw it. That is my
emotional memory of it. After reading Fang's post, I think in this
particular case that his analysis is more rational and accurate than my
memory." She said she had been in a state of trauma after separation from
her parents.
Some of her clarifications have also raised more questions than they answer.
She wrote: "I also did not say I was a factory worker. I said Mao wanted us
to study and learn from farmers, soldiers and workers." Yet a section of
her book is entitled Factory Worker: 1968 to 1976. It begins "When I was 10
… I received my first factory assignment," and describes her work in
several plants.
One of the biggest question marks is over the circumstances surrounding her
departure from China. The opening line of the book reads: "When I was 25
years old, the Chinese government quietly deported me", prompting sceptics
to point out that usually only prominent dissidents go into exile by
arrangement.
According to Fu's book, she was forced to leave because of her university
thesis on female infanticide prompted by the one-child policy. A Shanghai
newspaper learned of her groundbreaking research and "called for an end to
the madness" in an editorial comment subsequently republished by The People'
s Daily – in what would have been an astonishing move for the staid
official Communist party newspaper. That sparked an international outcry and
her detention, she wrote.
After Fang said he found no trace of the commentary, Fu responded: "I
remember reading an editorial in a newspaper in 1982 that called for gender
equality. It was not a news article and not written by me, and I didn't know
it had anything to do with my research. When writing the book, I did not
name the paper, since I wasn't certain. However, I think that is where I
read the editorial because it was the most popular and official newspaper."
She wrote that her parents arranged for her to study in the US after her
release, but argued that she was forced into exile because police told her
to leave China.
The personification of the American dream, Fu worked her way through college
in the US as a babysitter, cleaner and waitress. She now sits on the US
National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship; last month 3D
Systems announced a deal to acquire her firm, Geomagic.
Neither Penguin – which has published the book via its US imprint – nor
Ping Fu were available for comment.

not lies.
http://ph.news.yahoo.com/china-bloggers-vilify-us-executives-me
China bloggers vilify US executive's memoirs
A Chinese-born businesswoman's harrowing tales of gang-rape and murder in
the Cultural Revolution years have come under fire from web vigilantes who
accuse her of duping impressionable US readers.
Ping Fu, who went on to found US technology firm Geomagic and sits on a
White House panel on innovation, has described dreadful experiences in her
rags-to-riches autobiography "Bend, Not Break" and media interviews.
Born in 1958, Fu said she was gang-raped and forced into child labour in a
factory, and that on one occasion the Maoist Red Guards dismembered a
teacher with four horses pulling on each limb to terrify her and other
children.
She was jailed in the early 1980s for writing a university thesis on female
infanticide due to the one-child policy, she said, only for paramount leader
Deng Xiaoping to intervene. The book says she was later "quietly deported".
"Bend, Not Break" has reached the New York Times bestseller lists, and drew
rave reviews, before questions raised by a number of Chinese Internet
sleuths cast doubt on key parts of Fu's life story.
She has admitted to some exaggeration in the book but has blamed that on a
faulty memory or intervention by her editors, insisting her memoirs are not
a fabrication and accusing her Chinese critics of waging a "smear campaign".
But her chief attacker Fang Zhouzi, a prominent blogger known for hunting
down celebrity lies, says he will stay on the offensive.
"Fu Ping not only fabricated her tragic experiences during the Cultural
Revolution, but also fabricated what she saw during the period when China
strictly enforced the family planning policy," he wrote in his latest
article.
"Because she knows clearly that apart from the Cultural Revolution, the
family planning policy is another Chinese scandal that can most easily touch
Americans' nerves," Fang said.
Fu told a US radio station last month that she personally witnessed the
killings of hundreds of baby girls, and drew official ire for exposing this
in her thesis.
Fang says it is incredible that she could have seen so much infanticide, and
says that if Deng had intervened on her behalf when she was jailed, nobody
would have dared to expel her from the country.
He has also dismissed her account of the teacher's equine quartering as "
easy to tell but hard to conduct", adding in an email to AFP: "I will
continue to write" about her.
Fang suggested that Fu -- who uses a Western word order for her name --
invented the stories to enlist sympathy from US officialdom and build a
grittier image of survival to embellish her credentials in the business
world.
"No matter how fantastic your experiences sounded, Americans would believe
them to be true. Some people told so many lies that they even started
believing it themselves," he said.
A decade after leaving China, Fu became a naturalised citizen in 1992 and
was given an "Outstanding American by Choice" award by the US government
last year.
In its citation, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services agency said she
"was imprisoned during college for her research into China's history of
infanticide".
But a Chinese teacher who was on the same university course as Fu said that
if she had been jailed for her thesis, none of their fellows was aware of it.
"The heroine in the story was indeed good at writing, this was a fact,"
Zilanzhai Zhuren wrote last month in his own blog. "But what she wrote was
mostly literary novels."
Fu responded to some of Fang's accusations in her blog on huffingtonpost.com
, blaming media misinterpretations and a typo in her book for any
misunderstanding.
But she admitted that Fang's analysis of the dismemberment-by-horse was "
more rational and accurate" than her "emotional" memory.
In interviews, she has said that the word "deport" was not in her manuscript
but suggested by her editors to "attract readers", and that "we could say
that was a literary interpretation".
But on Twitter, Fu described one of Fang's exposes as "full of errors". "He
should fact-check," she added, while promising to "correct and rectify
imperfection" in the book's next printing.
"I want Chinese people to know that I love China because I grew up there,"
she said. "My book was attacked by people who didn't read my book and piled
on to hurt and insult me. Please support human kindness."

http://berlinfang.blog.163.com/blog/static/11667071620131811832

Fabrications fail as world flattens
Updated: 2013-02-19 08:01
By Berlin Fang ( China Daily)
Ping Fu, co-founder of software company Geomagic, recently had a
rollercoaster ride in the media spotlight with the release of her new book
Bend Not Break: A Life in Two Worlds, a memoir that documents her misery in
China and rise to glory in the United States. In China she was initially
lauded as an example of how social environments can break a person. To her
US readers, she was a symbol of the American Dream.
Her story soon caught the attention of myth-buster Fang Zhouzi who started
to expose the inaccuracies in her account. She also aroused the suspicions
of Chinese people living in the US, especially those with first hand
experience of the times she described. Within days, Fu fell from being
lauded as a heroine to being vilified as a liar.
Indeed, based on published reports and interviews, her stories do not agree
with each other. For instance, after the US Citizenship and Immigration
Services named her "Outstanding American by Choice" in 2012, Fu was
interviewed by China News, and she was profiled in this interview as "a
graduate student majoring in comparative literature" whose "competence in
languages" led her to study computer languages. In her new book she said she
could only say three words in English when she first came to the US. Other
reports show that she obtained her permanent residence in the US by seeking
political asylum. At that time, she probably felt she had to justify her
application with persecution stories like those described in the book.
The book may have its truthful elements, but to most Chinese readers it
seems that the majority of the facts have been bent too much to be
believable. It is puzzling to see that some non-Chinese readers have chosen
to defend her despite the lies that have been exposed. In a report about the
backlash, one reader thanks Fu for her stories as she shows the American
dream to be alive and well while the current culture in the US has
encouraged an entitlement mentality. Another reader commented on Twitter
that he suspects the Chinese government to be orchestrating negative reviews
in Amazon, where the book is listed. China's "cultural revolution" (1966-76
), a major era in Fu's book, was officially denounced by the Chinese
government in a resolution in 1981. It is a dark page in Chinese history. Fu
really did not need to use pulp fiction techniques to embellish or twist
her history to make it sound more melodramatic than it really was.
Fu's narration is more of the "scar literature" that has been popular in the
US. Such writing uses shallow sensationalism to dramatize personal
suffering. In her interviews and writing Fu comes across as a victim of
horrendous circumstances, such as gang rape by Red Guards. It is unnecessary
and dishonest to fabricate, exaggerate, misrepresent or create experiences
to tell a story to make herself sound greater than she really is.
If she had intended to blend fiction with her memoirs, her book would have
been better labeled fiction. But even now she continues to defend her
stories by trying to convince people of the authenticity of what she has
written. Dave Eggers wrote What is the What a few years ago about the
legendary story of Sudanese refuge Valentino Achak Deng. Eggers did not
pretend he could get all the facts straight based on Deng's narration, hence
the categorization of the book as a fictionalized memoir.
Fu's downfall is thought provoking. Some may consider her to be a victim of
jealousy. If that is the case, Yao Ming would be attacked everyday, but he
is not. Neither do people question Nien Cheng or Ningkun Wu, who both gave
truthful accounts of their personal sufferings during the "cultural
revolution" for an English audience. Public anger toward Fu comes from a
dislike of dishonest people, and the concern that such people reinforce
negative racial stereotypes. I think most people in the world have a low
tolerance for dishonesty. Fu is just getting what Greg Mortensen got for
bending facts in his book Three Cups of Tea.
In the past, when geographical and language barriers kept information from
spreading, Fu would probably have got away with her fabrications without
anybody noticing. Chinese businessman Tang Jun could probably also have
safely bragged about his glories in the US as only a handful people in China
knew anything about life in the outside world. However, it is increasingly
difficult to make "I am big in America" or "I am big in China" claims that
are untrue without public exposure. People leave digital trails that
eventually lead the public to the truth.
Fu may claim that the world is 3-D, but as far as information flow goes it
is still dangerously flat.
The author is a US-based instructional designer, literary translator and
columnist writing on cross-cultural issues.

Letter from China
Ensnared in the Trap of Memory
By DIDI KIRSTEN TATLOW
Published: February 20, 2013
BEIJING — “I remember we heard a nightingale together, on the boulevard
near the Sacred Heart convent. But there are no nightingales in North
America.” So wrote Mary McCarthy in “Memories of a Catholic Girlhood,”
challenging the reliability of memory.
Reviewing the book in 1957 in The New York Times, Charles Poore said, “We
all add to our memories of childhood appropriate bits of what we have read
or heard since then.”
The fallibility of memory may partly explain the fracas surrounding “Bend,
Not Break,” a recently published business-cum-personal memoir by Ping Fu,
born in 1958, of growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution, moving
to the United States and founding a successful software company called
Geomagic.
Ms. Fu, too, has her “nightingale” moment, in Nanjing. Red Guards, she
writes, had sent her there from her childhood home of Shanghai (where she
was staying without a residence permit, with relatives) to live at the
university where her father taught. (In her narrative, her parents were
banished to the countryside soon after she arrived.) There she was forced by
Red Guards to watch a teacher “quartered by four horsemen on the soccer
field.”
Details like that have produced a storm of opposition from some Chinese,
especially in the United States, who accuse Ms. Fu of lying.
The Cultural Revolution was bad for many, they agree, but it’s important to
be accurate. Ms. Fu’s story simply isn’t.
“I personally feel that it is very important to use facts and rigid
analysis instead of fabricated stories to bridge various knowledge and
cultural gaps between China and the outside world,” Kevin Tu, who is
Chinese and lives in the United States, wrote in an e-mail.
“While I can easily enjoy reading books such as ‘Mao’s Great Famine”’
— Frank Dikötter’s account of the brutality of the Great Leap Forward
— “I just couldn’t accept the fact someone like Fu Ping intentionally
misbehaved for personal gain,” Mr. Tu wrote.
Accusations are flying in online forums. Calm voices are hard to find.
Other things the critics don’t believe: that she was “quietly deported”
to the United States in 1984 for writing a university thesis about female
infanticide; that she was gang-raped by Red Guards.
On that last point, Ms. Fu said by telephone from the United States, “They
are in denial.”
Rape happened during the Cultural Revolution, she said. She stands by her
statement that she was told to leave, though she agrees “deported” wasn’t
a good choice of word.
And Ms. Fu has since said that the quartering by horse was an “emotional
memory,” something Ms. McCarthy explored. There may be more admissions to
come. “If I have made any factual errors, I’d be more than happy to
correct them in the next printing,” she said.
Her critics will be glad to hear that. Perhaps what’s needed to calm the
storm is for Penguin, her publisher, to appoint a fact-checker.
Yet the difficulty is that the instant something sounds bizarre, closer
investigation finds kernels of possible truth.
She writes that state agents abducted her after they heard about her
infanticide paper and that she was detained for three days in stinking
conditions. Such things still happen in China.
Ms. Fu sent me a scanned copy of what she said was a letter from a fellow
student, dated May 1982. In the hand-written letter, he mentions that Ms. Fu
left university abruptly, without graduating, as all the others were
finishing their theses — under mysterious circumstances that classmates
gossiped about but didn’t understand.
He writes that college officials were saying that Ms. Fu had a nervous
breakdown after being jilted. A classmate was named as the former boyfriend.
Ms. Fu said in the interview that this was a cover-up and that in reality
she was in political trouble, that her thesis had been secretly passed by a
sympathetic teacher to a newspaper and traveled up the chain. Eventually,
she said, it caused a national and international scandal about the abuses of
the one-child policy.
In the letter, the classmate wonders if the story about the jilting was true
. He writes that he spoke to the jilter “for about an hour” about Ms. Fu,
but the man was distant and “He says he was also a victim.”
By 1983, state news media were reporting on female infanticide. “At present
, the phenomena of butchering, drowning and leaving to die female infants
and maltreating women who have given birth to female infants have been very
serious. It has become a grave social problem,” People’s Daily reported on
March 3 of that year, according to a New York Times article dated April 11.
If it’s difficult to establish the truth, there’s a reason: 37 years after
the Cultural Revolution, it’s still impossible to research, discuss or
publish about it freely in China. Censorship is harsh — there are well-
known people who have much to hide about what they did, some say. Guilt
lingers. The result is confusion, despite a deep well of personal memory (
memory again!). The field is open for denial, exaggeration and shame. “
Proof” is often merely recollection, Ms. McCarthy’s unreliable friend.
Is Ms. Fu telling the truth, but people just don’t know it? Or are “
nightingales” singing in a self-dramatizing narrative? Until China opens
its archives and permits open debate, we won’t know. Not for sure. Because
even “experts” on China are often wrong. The facts just aren’t available.
