总统赞扬了达赖喇嘛对和平与非暴力的承诺，并表示支持尊者的中间路线。总统强调他
鼓励中国政府与达赖喇嘛通过对话以解决长期存在的分歧，并认为一个有结果的会谈对
中国和藏人都是有利的。
在此背景下，总统重申美国承认西藏是中国领土的一部分以及美国不支持西藏独立的立
场。达赖喇嘛说他没有寻求西藏独立并希望中国政府能够重启与他的代表的对话。总统
和达赖喇嘛都认为美中两国保持积极和建设性的关系很重要。

Readout of the President’s Meeting with His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama
The President met this morning at the White House with His Holiness the XIV
Dalai Lama. The President reiterated his strong support for the preservation
of Tibet’s unique religious, cultural, and linguistic traditions and the
protection of human rights for Tibetans in the People’s Republic of China.
The President commended the Dalai Lama’s commitment to peace and
nonviolence and expressed support for the Dalai Lama’s “Middle Way”
approach. The President stressed that he encourages direct dialogue to
resolve long-standing differences and that a dialogue that produces results
would be positive for China and Tibetans. In this context, the President
reiterated the U.S. position that Tibet is part of the People’s Republic of
China and that the United States does not support Tibet independence. The
Dalai Lama stated that he is not seeking independence for Tibet and hopes
that dialogue between his representatives and the Chinese government will
resume. The President and the Dalai Lama agreed on the importance of a
positive and constructive relationship between the United States and China. | r*****1
