Yesterday, I did the longest hiking I ever had. This is an out and back
hiking with 2999*2 ft elevation. The road is rough with rocks, and I
finished in about 10 hours. The last one could be a 16-mile I did in TX for
perhaps 8 hours, or the around 18-mile I walked at the end of my 50-race.
The night before, I thought about the 26-mile and prepared some food and
drink which are far away being enough. Overall I drank 1LB of water, 3L of
G2, ate 6 energy bars, 1/2 subway, 1.5 pita bread with dried beef, 1 giant
banana, and many nuts/oreo, several of which are handed over to me by my
considerate teammates. I wanted to share some of the difficulties I had
during the hiking with my running friends who are planning to hike-:)
1. A big problem is the bottom of my forefeet started hurting after less
than 6 miles of hiking. I wore two pairs of socks and Cumulus-4 which has
been retired from my running as it felt so heavy. My quad was also painful
through the hiking. A team member later told me that he also got his
blisters and painful quad. All these are only because of less training as he
did many hiking before but was not very active recently
2. A hiking pole turned out to be my life-savor especially on the way back.
3. I think the biggest problem for me is the mentality. Although to run a 12
-mile sounds nothing but enjoyable for me, the concept of hiking for 6 mile
for about 2.5 hours could kill me. I felt so boring of the long road but
could not do anything because of my painful feet and legs. I knew this
impatience could do me nothing good and I tried to think about other things,
but was not very successful, until I started to chat.
I know some of my team members finished or have the capability to finish in
7 hours if they went by themselves. My hat off to these strong hikers!

hiking更训练耐心,我现在还无法想象走这么久,
如果给我走3hr和跑3hr的选择,
那一定是后者

Net time you travel to SoCal, you can enjoy much better hike, less distance,
significantly higher elevation gain, breathe-taking scenery. You will start
to hike very soon above the clouds, and into the pine woods and waterfalls,
and in the end, also enjoy the snow at the summit.

The crazy thing about this group is that they said early 80% for training
and 20% for the scene, but I guess it turned out to be 100% for training! On
the way back, I saw several beautiful places and thought I went to a wrong
way: the route was correct just I almost did not look around in the first
half...
Yes, I knew how beautiful SoCal is and I am planning to come back to SoCal
sometime-:)

Well done, caomu mm. 8 hours hiking!
If I were you, I would wear hiking boots instead of retired running shoes.
It would make huge difference. Walking poles are also very helpful, but I
normally do not take them.
Hiking is quite different from running. I would take two meals (sandwiches,
pasta etc.), snacks, fruits and plenty of water for 8 hours' hiking. Because
of the relatively slower pace compared to running, you've got the chance to
enjoy the scenery more.

Last time on the C2C, I was passed by a guy who was almost running on the
trail. I heard while having conversation with some local people during that
hike that some people take that hike 2-3 times in one day back to back just
to train. Now I know what type of sports they were training for.

I hiked C2C about four years ago, and we started from 2am and even skipped
the last part (skyline down) and take the tram down before we took a cab
back to the Museum parking around 7pm.
Frank (a guy I hiked with years ago) did the C2C completely up and down (
which I thought was crazy as going down 10,000+ ft kills your knees), and I
believe it took him more than 20 hours.
Running up and down twice within a day is doable for elite ultra runners,
but definitely not for even the best amateurs.

They were hiking/running up from the museum lot to the tram, taking the tram
down, then up again... I think that is what I heard. The guy passed me was
in very good shape, and in very light gear.
On that same day, I did museum up to summit back down to tram station in 17
hours :( I would not want to hike down the skyline trail, don't have that
strong knees for it.

If they are training for ultra, then running down is even more important. I
ran with baiji a week ago on Mt Wilson, and the running down is much more
challenging.
In ultra, it won't make a huge difference to run (well, many times juts fast
walk) up, but will make a huge difference to run down.
I trashed my legs so hard that I believe it did more damage to my legs than
my Marathon two weeks ago

除去第三条mentality的问题。其他问题好像都是可以解决的。第一就是换hiking boot/shoes. 第二无非是那些肌肉平时用的太少而已,多爬几次就不酸疼了。

well, I dont know C2C, but going up and down 20000ft in 24 hours
is doable for the best amateurs, like ws100: +18000/-22000ft, lots
of ppl finished in 24 hours.....although it's racing, no one would

problem in C2C is the largest part is absolutely without water supply, and
when we started at 2am in the dark, it was already 95+. You need carry all
the water and supply with you for the first 8,000 ft steep climb.
WS100 is not only a race, but also with supply station every few miles.

i did C2C last year, similar time, started 3am (basically we couldnt walked

took the tram down 7pm. It was 106F, killing heat. Cannot imagine how to
run the 10 miles without water station.
