I'm wondering if some body here has the experience of scanning a 3D specimen
and then get its surface profile. After that, how to incorporate it into FEM
software to generate mesh. So, the questions are:
What kind of hardware did you use -- I mean the scanning machine.
And, what kind of software did you use to generate FEM mesh using the sacnned
surface?
In general, the scanning result will be some 'point cloud'. I wonder how to
generate FEA mesh by using this point cloud.

does anybody have some experience with the 3D FEM(unstructued mesh)
code?
I am wondering how complicated it would be if I start from the very
beginning, i.e., generate the mesh(from some software) and reading
the mesh(my own code). And the equation is non-linear elliptic equation.
Is that reasonable to be a project of MS degree? Any suggestion is highly
appreciated.

and how "huge" will your model be?
I finished my MS in china on 3D FEM programming, in the end of the
programming, I found out PC is too weak to run my program. Hard drive was not
big enough, and the CPU took it forever to ...
BTW: I used 20-node 3D cubic elements, plus 9-node shell elements and 3-node
beam elements.

我现在做的是mass transport, fluid dynamic, reation engineering, enzym
kinetics ....
我上过一门introduction to FEM. 学了一些 plane stress, plane strain, and heat transfer的东西,也用Algon作了一些model,但是肯定是不如专门做这个的精通了。
我看到大家提供的网站要的人主要是做machenics的,照我的经历看,有可能转到
这个方向上去么? 谢谢

看来你是个外行的人,无知者无畏。
就像搞实验的,用过一两次Fluent就以为自个会CFD了。有个这样的人曾跟我说,你会做个网格,别人也会做个网格,不就用个软件吗?有什么特别的?殊不知做网格也有水平、经验的区别,质量高低,数值耗散大小,是否提高速度、节约内存之分。做得差的网格不别说运算精不好,甚至结果都出不来。FEM网格做得不够,不断加密就是了,CFD能随便这吗?FEM一般是做固体内部的分析,而CFD做的往往是包裹在固体部件外面的
所有空间的流动分析,运算区域的外形的复杂程度就高不少,固体部件不过其中一个小小边界条件而已。
未听说过FEM程序要跑上一个星期的,但是在cluster上跑上个星期甚至月份的CFD应用多的是。简单的CFD和FEM程序我都写过,直接体会就是CFD难多了,你要是想真正比较,先去写了代码结果调试出来再发话。就CFD实践应用来讲,我没有具体资料,但从经验我敢说,不管什么用户水平,世界上90%的Fluent运算最后是以发散失败告终的,每一个成功的结果都是无数次反复修改网格和重新设置后才出来的,除非是简单的教学
范例。
如果CFD的稳定性数学分析那么简单,为什么当初需要冯。

好的,你说我是外行就外行吧,但请不要轻易说别人无知。
我是从来没有用过诸如fluent的软件,也没看见过周边有人用过几次fluent就自
认为会CFD了。对于复杂边界区域,可以采用分区降低复杂度,采用非结构性网格
适应复杂边界,或者采用不同区域不同分辨率的简单的差分网格来简化问题,当
然也有采用结构性网格(比如贴体曲线坐标)解决一些简单问题,但这个也不是
CFD专有的。弹性力学计算没你想的这么简单,计算区域也有非常复杂的,比如桥
梁结构(光是建模就能让人吐血),另外网格也不是你说的不断加密就能解决问
题,网格划分不好,计算结果也会有问题,对于网格这方面,未必比CFD就容易。
对于特定的问题,如何进行网格划分都有一些约定俗成的东西,自己拍脑袋瞎琢
磨当然不行。所以对于网格问题,难点不在于如何使用网格划分软件,也不在于
网格划分的算法,而在于对于不同的问题如何选取合适的网格,这个就得凭经验
了。
另外纠正你一个问题,FEM是指有限单元法,CFD的软件中有很多是采用的FEM方
法,包括taylor的那三卷FEM金典,第三卷就是讲如何使用FEM求解流体力学问
题,第二卷则是针对固体力学。flu

另外一个关于精度的很奇怪,我听说过长方形网格精度高于三角形网格,但是又看到似乎

FEM is always a very hot topic in PDE numerical solution.
In finance, I don't think it is commonly used, which I think because all
the PDE models in finance are too simple in the point view of FEM category.
But I do know some people researched on FEM application in finance.
