其他行业不懂， 光BIOSCIENCE 领域：
公司里混个“Scientist”， 真的不是难事， 运气好点的， 甚至小硕士本科混个
年头都成。真还别把个“Scientist”跟Faculty比来比去。。。９９％ 的“
Scientist”绝对做不了Faculty， 相反， 做不下去Faculty的去公司混“Scientist
”真有那木少数。
Manager：看你管多少人，TEAM LEADER而已 ， 没个１５ 来万至少， 就别太得瑟
人家Faculty过的如何如何miserable......， Faculty没想像的那木难堪。。。
真做到CEO的，那是真牛人！ 如果年薪动则百万千万。。。恭喜， 你就真牛到可
以根本不用鸟Faculty
说到底： 生活就是“混” －－ 看哪样混自己更开心而已！ |

如果“永久”指得是北美的那种tenure-track or tenured professorship，那么这个
senior scientist正常情况下是不可能转成教授的，如果原来系里有opening，你得重
新申请，和外面的人一起竞争。
但是eth很多senior scientist一直干到退休，很少有被裁掉的，所以当地人也管它叫
永久职位。我认识几个senior scientist直接说他们是tenured，只是这个tenured的概
念和北美的不是太一样。
eth正式的professor人数少，每个权力是很大的（选校长、选dean什么的），而且基本
都有私人秘书（也有的是2人share一个秘书），学校每年也有大量funding支持。
这些权力即使是“永久”的senior scientist 也没有。 |

发帖数: 1212 | 7 嗯，我对data scientist的理解和你不太一样。我心目中合格的data scientist要能独
当一面，不需要SDE support，能够迅速把问题理解并数学建模（一般SDE做不了这个）
，需要是个Linux和各种open source language / tools的高手，有处理各种类型数据
的经验和能力（至少要比一般的SDE强个数倍，最好有Information retrival和NLP背景
）以及快速建立系统原型（擅长各种快速开发工具，效率比一般SDE快个数倍），能够
用统计方法评估各种ML算法的优劣（一般非PhD SDE很少能干这个）的能力。这样他才
能指引方向，说哪种ML方法合适这个问题，系统原型怎么构建。
想当个好data scientist不容易。Engineer能力不足的data scientist需要修炼。这条
路很长，不过好处是知识成体系，有积累，项目经验很有价值，不太容易被淘汰。相比
之下，SDE特别是Client-side的SDE知识更新太快，我很担心那条路以后容易和后辈竞
争。比如，谁知道将来的browser是什么样，手机用什么操作系统？

同的组，都跟我的背景有关系。
面coding的两个国人大哥出的题比 leedcode 还简单，都是分个词查个数之类的，然后
还花好多时间介绍他们自己的project。
和另外两个白人聊了好多research，他们感兴趣的都是我比较早的project，感觉倒不
如coding来得舒服。
问了最后一个白哥F家research scientist怎么申请的，怎么网页里没有；他说他当时
申请的也是engineer，结果offer出来就给的scientist。
难道F家的scientist都是通过面试才给的？
是不是如果research 问题没答好，code写对了，至少可以给个engineer的position？
没有签什么保密书，coding题目太简单了不说了。

先简单介绍一下自己的背景，05年西安交大eee本科毕业，后去鼻屎国拿了个eee
master, 毕业后一直在某semiconductor MNC做information system enginer. 前几年
一直做development的工作，最近转做比较project management的role, 公司现在大规
模引进hadoop, splunk来做business analysis的方面，现在我在lead一个team用
splunk做operation intelligence. 觉得big data还有data scientists是以后的方向(
钱景也不错，俗人一个:p)，很想往这个深入发展。深知data scientists有两种，一种
是目前的BI转过去的，另一种是比较有料的有machine learning, statistics背景会
programming的，我比较想往第二种发展，因为不想浪费自己programming的背景，想求

fb里面很多data scientist转software engineer的，包括stat phd。engineer转data
scientist几乎没有。
fb组织比较扁平透明，ds能访问的数据集engineer都能访问。一般实用点的分析
engineer写query可能比ds还要快。高级炫酷的分析，其实很多不实用就是food for
thought。
ds最好的工作办法是拿一个report忽悠到一个中高层，然后让他配个engineer把事情做
出来，然后idea算ds的。微软里面pm和高层把数据集霸占着engineer访问不了只能被牵
着走做了也是被人领导做出来了。但是fb的组织结构engineer自主权很高，基本没有
engineer会被ds牵着走。真正实用能做出来的idea都是很简单的分析，能做engineer早
自己做了为啥要等着变成别人带领自己做。
还有很多ds的瓶颈来自新数据的logging。而engineer要自己加了logging也会顺势把分
析做了。

到今天ISS告诉我PWD下来了，research scientist的prevailing wage是66K，H1B办不
了了。悲剧了。
我不甘心，仔细查了查http://www.flcdatacenter.com上的数据，其中
OES/SOC Code: 19-2012
OES/SOC Title: Physicists
level 1的prevailing wage才46K，level 2的倒是65K。难道是学校ISS搞错了？

一开始她告诉我，Research Associate是相当于Technician的，而Assistant
Scientist，以后可以升成Associate Scientist，再上去就是Faculty 。但是昨天我看
到打出的广告变成了“Research Associate”就去找她。结果她又说Research
Associate是比Assistant Scientist高而比Associate Scientist低，介于两者间的
Title。
另外，Research Associate中文翻译成什么比较合适（考虑到回国找位置）? |

大家刚出学校找工作的时候没什么相关经验，容易被打着startup旗号招廉价劳动力的
小公司忽悠，这个我理解。今天冒着被拍砖的风险说说我对找startup job的看法。
1. startup跟小公司不是对等概念。所有规模小（SBIR的定义是500人以内）的公司
都是小公司，Startup在我看来仅限于有高度增长潜力的小公司。注意这里的限定词是
“高度增长”和“潜力”。我认为进一般小公司通常比不上进大公司（training，
compensation，horizon），但进一个靠谱的startup完全可以比进大公司性价比高，成
长机会多。
2. 你问成长机会来自哪里，我认为主要来自startup的两个特点：人少事儿多；成
长快导致新生机会多。先说第一点，拿我自己举例，我也是PhD出身，创业前没有任何
工作经验。合伙创业后，我担纲负责的项目有：
