was very excited after watching Chicago marathon, had to force myself to
hold back my pace by breathing 4/4 with mouth closed in the first 10 miles.
a very comfortable and relaxed long run, 22.5 miles, 2:51:49. Mile splits
are 8:04, 7:44, 7:59, 7:55, 7:50, 7:48, 7:34, 7:29, 7:35, 7:19, 7:37, 7:32,
7:32, 7:30, 7:36, 7:37, 7:33, 7:38, 7:50, 7:32, 7:38, 7:17, last .5 mi @ 7:
26. One GU gel, two bathroom breaks.

way to go!
i too ran with 4/4 breathing today, but only managed 12mi at 8:30/mi pace...

I know I should read AM first 'cause it must have the answers for me, but I
still want to ask you what the basic
breathing techniques are. I believe I was breathing with my mouth open (not
sure if it's for in or out).
I also had a 23k long run this morning with a sub-3 Chinese guy here. He
pointed out my breathing was too
rapid (2/2), and told me I should do 4/4 for easy long run. But what's easy
for him is definitely not easy for
me. With all the stops, pauses and walks included, it took us 2:05 for the
23k. But with "auto pause". his 305
showed 1:45.

Normally, I would breathe with mouth open for sure. Breathing with mouth
closed is my way of forcing myself to run at a slower pace than I would if I
just let myself go. In an easy run, I would typically do 4/4 with mouth
open or "half open". For recovery runs, I sometimes breathe as slow as 5/5,
mostly 4/4 with mouth closed. In a tempo run, I would breathe 3/3 to 2/2.
There are still different ways to do, say, 2/2. In a tempo run I would
breathe "normally", whereas in a 5K race I would still do 2/2 (at least in
the first half) but I force the air out rapidly (stomach breathing?) so that
I can take in more oxygen with each breath.

Nice pace.
When I can run sub-8 with 4/4 breathing, I think I am ready for a marathon.
