you drive, meet us at destination. If you take train, we meet at 9:30am at
Big Clock in Grand Central Station, Manhattan to take train to Cold Spring.
Please buy ticket when you arrive. Train ride is about 1 hour. The Bull Hill
(Mt. Taurus) hike is about 5 hours for about 4.5 miles.
We'll go to the river beach afterwards. For people who want to swim, please
bring swimming suit.

比如How to Solve It, Mathematics and Plausible Reasoning,
The Stanford Mathematics Problems。近的有Paul Zeitz的
The Art and Craft of Problem Solving, Terrance Tao的
Solving Mathematical Problems: A Personal Perspective,
各种Challenging Mathematical XXX, 各种Putnam竞赛指南,
IMO竞赛指南,各种这个art那个craft,更是数不胜数。再说还有
大学的专项,比如各种Combinatorics集锦,各种数论习题和思路
讨论,离散数学的书,比如Concrete Mathematics。各种深浅
图论的书。至于精彩的recreational math, 也有Martin Gardner等
一票经典作家的N多作品。
话说回来,真要学数学,要学要看的书海了去了,也不用每天钻竞赛题。

楼主和她的孩子都很不容易。
国情很不一样。一般来说,这边小孩的条件优越多了。
毫无疑问:国内中小学生的数学内容深不少,中国奥数队的平均水平也明显比美国队的
高。近十多年来,基本上所有的中国奥数队员都拿金牌。(在近15年里:83金,7银。
在参赛的26所有26年里:119金,26银,5铜。)

在近些年里,亚裔对美国奥数赛贡献很大。教练也是华裔。很多本奥数书是个罗马尼亚

新人来湾区不到2个月,买了部二手的2007Camry,结果只有一把普通钥匙,不带遥控钥
匙,找车非常不方便。
Amazon花了60刀买了把全新的遥控钥匙,评价很高,网上我也搜了下攻略,可以self
program。
结果拿到手之后,试了半天,开关门,插拔钥匙,也没搞出来。后来网上又搜到07之后
的Camry安全性加强了,必须要dealer那边才能program。
于是乎,电话询价,Putnam Toyota说90刀可以搞定,比另一家locksmith的199刀靠谱。
极品的事情来了,到了之后,接待人员先是警告我,这个不是他们的钥匙,program失
败这个90刀照付的。等了一个钟头,又来告诉我,什么valet key要全部reset,如果遥
控钥匙program失败,普通钥匙也会不工作,那我就没钥匙了。用这个来吓唬我,来花
300多刀买他们自己的钥匙。我当然说,please try。
又等了一个多小时,告诉我说不行,没钥匙了,警告过我了,必须要我花钱买他们的钥
匙。我就让他们弄给我看,那边遥控钥匙cut好了,可以打开门,打开电源,就是没法
启动,遥控也不工作,可是原先的钥匙还是好的。然... 阅读全帖

刚看了大家的留言,感谢大家一直关心,尤其是飞姐一直打电话来,昨天最后我和LD
都已经不行了(她也基本两天没睡),最后的电话没接到,还好还算顺利赶上飞机,
及时返回SD....
关于为什么后面网站没有我的信息,我到KT Aid Station的时候,我第2个pacer,
已经受伤了,她就留在了KT, 我一个人继续走的,我有GPS,头灯,但这个比赛的
marker分的比较远,我后来也有点沉不住气,走的有点急,有个turn的地方,我没
走对,掉到一个直线下降的干河沟,再爬上来就找不到原来的路了,晚上在mountain上,
我只能看到黑乎乎的山在你的周围,但我不知道怎么从一座山去另一座山,最后拼命找到
到3点多种,知道没办法赶48小时deadline了,就找了个大石头捱到天亮,大概6点钟
天亮以后,靠GPS找到track, 走了一会儿,碰到从putnam AS过来搜索的人,最后
又走了大概5个迈,回到Silverton附近的马路,被LD pick up...
这个比赛的难度实在超出我的想像,我第2个pacer其实是RD的小侄女,算对course
比较熟悉了,但是跟我爬了17迈就受伤没办法走了,... 阅读全帖

学术界相对来说还是干净的,特别是有arxiv这样的东西之后,大佬想截留难度越来越
大。不懂你啥意思,费曼掌握了出名的技术?费曼出名虽然很多噱头比如开锁打鼓什么
的,但是最关键的还是人家的路径积分是量子力学第三种表现形式,费曼图还是场论的
基本工具,老杨和费曼谁牛我搞不清,但是我可以肯定老杨不会比费曼强十倍。费曼虽
然看上去放荡不羁不务正业,但其实是少年天才,作为一个物理学家,人当年是全美数
学竞赛的Putnam fellow,数学家JOHN nash因为没拿到这个耿耿于怀一辈子。

楼主,我对你传播经验的做法非常支持。不过你对consulting收入的说法是完全错误的。
McKinsey BCG 招进来的PhD和MBA是一样的职位, 在McKinsey叫Associate, BCG叫
Consultant。2015年入职的McKinsey Associate Base $140K, bonus up to $35K,
retirement contribution $20.4K, sign on bonus $25K. BCG Base高$5K, bonus也多
一些,retirement contribution少一点,最后总额差不多。2017年入职的Associate
base涨到153K了。Bain非常少招PhD,不评价。
即使是二线的生物为主的consulting firm也远不止80-90K. L.E.K.的life science
specialist 4-5年前就$115K了。Boston那些小公司,ClearView, Putnam, Clarion之类
的,都在$100-120K之间。大部分小公司PhD进去比本科生高一级比MBA低一级,大部分

补充说一下两家公司的title,McKinsey/BCG分别是:
1. Business Analyst / Associate (本科)
2. Associate / Consultant (MBA/PHD/MD/JD)
3. Engagement Manager / Project Leader
4. Associate Partner / Principal
5. Partner / Partner
McKinsey美国office没有"consultant"这个职位,consultant是前面1-5的统称。
最后关于小咨询公司的收入,的确参差不齐。你说的$80K是肯定存在的,这样的公司我
知道好几家,就不点名了,glassdoor上面可以看。Vault consulting里面排名较高的
几个, LEK, Putnam Associate, ClearView 给PhD都在$110K以上,大概1-2年升到和
MBA一样的职位,跟MBB差不多。

从义无反顾地跳出学术坑,到在一家大药厂找到满意的工作,大约折腾了一年半左右。
这期间可以说所有传统的生物千老/科研狗能够得着的路全试过。有的走通了,有的觉
得不适合自己放弃,有的因为简历不够好被拒了。也一直在不断地想自己不蹲学术坑了
,到底想做什么、能做什么?同时跟很多在出坑道路上的难友们交流过。
把这些一手和很熟悉可靠的二手经验总结整理出来,希望能有帮助,愿大家都能找到最
适合自己的路、早日出坑!过上有尊严有质量的生活!!
先简单介绍一下自己:
以前的我就是那种像被洗脑一样一门心思想要蹲穿学术坑,我不做科研狗谁做科研狗的
那种。苦熬苦忍了N年,物质、精神、感情严重透支。等到终于熬出头可以申发考题的
时候,真的已经是“强弩之末不能穿鲁缟”了。
不过本着对自己脑子进水的青春岁月负责的态度,还是申了大约二十所学校。基本就是
北美前三十的。当时想的就是名校都这德行(我博士、千老都是在所谓名校过的),别
的就更不值了。
拿到两个面试。第一个面完以后,就跟那种已经完全磨平了的轮胎一样,一步都不想再
跑了。第二个本来也不太想去,就直接取消了。不过最后第一个也没要我。不然的话... 阅读全帖
