在本版转了半天，发现CS和统计真是一个大坑，冒险再挖一个，希望大家给些建议。
女友是国内top2的cs master，准备今年申请明年过来。初步确定准备申个master然后
找工作，但没定是继续读cs还是转统计。
转统计主要是基于几点考虑，一是看版上大家说统计的工作轻松，比较适合女生；二是
因为对比了我们现在考虑的几个项目（芝大和西北），发现统计的学费相对便宜；三是
学了统计可能就业面就广一些。
她本人没有特别偏好。请教一下大家，对于这样有cs背景（国内本科+国内硕士）的女
生，从来美国找工作（prefer在芝加哥）和以后职业前景考虑，是应该统计还是cs？

在他们的course list里面但是我却在course search里面没有找到，说明曾经打算开过

However, since passer rating is only measuring the passing part of the QB,
not including the rushing, the sacks, the fumble, ect., calling it QB rating
is a bit misleading. Therefore people usually call it passer rating.

用option当然可以，但不是必须，
用option可以得到更高的leverage，
但是缺点是散户量小，不容易实现market neutral。
比如1.37的hedge ratio，你要long 137和short 100个才能实现。
13和10就不那么好，而且不容易adjust，看附图就知道不怎么neutral的情况。
说stock不便于对冲，这点我不懂你什么意思。
这本身就是market neutral的strategy。
我测试过DISCA和AXP（paper account)，追踪了至少2个月，涨跌幅从来没超过3%的，
但是这反过来说明这不是一对好的pair。
别的pair，没有任何leverage，一年可以做到100%以上的也有，如果我实际做stock到
这个%，

而这种phenotype出现表明是激活JAK/STAT pathway 导致的。
Active JAK/STAT能够导致某种function assay or phenotype.
我现在是想加入某种drug出现某种function assay or phenotype.
说明drug是active JAK/STAT,
当然WB观察phosphorylation stat也是一种方法，但是只是从protein level。
我现在是想从功能level观察。想问问是不是有实践证明的Active JAK/STAT 导致的某
种function。
比如说某种细胞的分化，这样我加入drug，细胞出现分化，说明可能是active JAK/

但如果是在学术界，有两点没econ好：
1. 现在基本都得做postdoc
2. 工资比econ低很多，特别是正教授， 在top学校经常只有econ的一半
ls有人提到中国人在stat混得比较好。这个没办法，做stat的美国人欧洲人什么的很少
， stat系中国人一大批。而econ各国人都有， 南美欧洲以色列日本都有做的很好的人
。econ学术界确实竞争要比stat大一些，但是绝对不超过math。除非lz有Terence Tao
或者Shing-tung Yau的天赋，否则math是绝对没有未来的。。:(
我曾经和一些stat phd谈过， 他们都劝我不要申stat。 感觉目前就是各个学科都不景
气， econ的骂econ, stat的骂stat, cs的骂cs, math,physics,bio就更不用说了都是
在劝退。
所以lz不是对学术特别执着的话， 确实去当个码工是最保险的 |

1.上面大家的讨论都是基于SQL Server吗？
2.rebuild index为什么不需要update stats呢？我理解的rebuild index只是重建索引
结构，对stats啥影响。即使rebuild index有一个默认的update stats选项，我感觉应
该只是update index关联列的stats。其他非索引列的stats还需要update.
导入数据后是否update stats，我认为要case by case分析。一个要考虑有没有足够长
的维护窗口来做一次足够强度的采样，二是考虑业务需求。有些业务是锁定统计数据的
，比方说有的表尺寸变化比较剧烈，这样的表不适合定期更新统计数据，需要锁定统计
数据防止在不合适的时间点做统计收集。
下面说Oracle。
Oracle也有根据数据变化百分比的threshold来触发统计数据收集作业。但是仍然导致
查询计划不稳定的问题。特别是对于低基数的索引列，where条件中用到的话，会被统

有贴出自己的hw3b，但现在我必须向亲爱的读者一一您公开道歉。因为当时因为着急，
我没能找到hw3b deadline前的版本，就把这次作业后来的最终版本（也就是那个楼贴
出来的，只剩下ReturnK、CompoundK两条小尾巴的版本，那个版本被我改动了时间戳我
现在已经把它改回来了。相比于急于求成绩，我更希望自己作一个诚实的人，希望大家
能原谅）给贴出来了。因为我们作业deadline之后也还都是可以接着交的，所以任何作
业，老师都是可以根据后来的版本，追终到这个学生的最后进展的，这个最新进展老师
到底给不给分、就要看老师如何下决定了。

除此以外，我没有意见
是一个非常适合外行人写的script language
理论上说，一个好的c++程序员可能写出比r更好的统计软件
但是前提是，这个程序员必需同时具备有cs和stat双料知识
否则它不懂stat还做什么开发？这种人相当不好找
这永远都是一个balance
现实生活中要找这样一个人非常难，而且这种人写出来的代码
很难被继承下来，因为会cs的一般不懂stat，会stat一般不懂cs
项目失败的可能性很大
理想状况是要去逼近，但是事实上是在绝大多数时候
你必需做出牺牲，选择就意味着放弃
那么放弃哪一个就很讲究了
对我来说，与其雇一个cs+stat双料学位的高手
还不如我找两个人，一个cs的，一个stat的，然后这两个人合作开发
这样的话，一旦其中一个人辞职，我可以很容易地找到替代人选
要不然一旦双料高手辞职，那对项目本身的破坏是毁灭性的
如果你对r的效率真心不满意，ok
换sas，sas可以帮你做最高效的统计软件
但是前提是给钱
如果你不想给钱，也有办法优化
先用sas搞定，然后找专门的公司把sas代码转换成java代码

to find a stat-related job in an indurstry other than pharm, stat
definitely has some advantages. Sometimes, they don't even know which stat
program is better, so the school's overall reputation matters more. On the
otherhand, if you want to find a job in pharm, it does not seem to make a
difference whether you own degree in stat or a biostat.

其中 university of toledo, university of texas at el paso 本校就有 business
school phd，将来要读 business school phd连校都不用转。在美国其实转校也挺麻烦
的，尤其是还要换城市的话。就是el paso地方比较烂。 university of toledo 地方
还行。而且wright state 的奖学金还比较高，大概生活费有个一年一万三。
建议不要卖楼。总会有办法的。而且我觉得卖楼读stat master真心不划算，我就看到
有家里掏钱读了自费读了stat ms又回国的，因为找不到工作，而且还在美国大城市。 |

不谈faculty，
单纯的工作，stat之间差距很大。
nb的stat PhD可以去大公司做ML scientist，一年40万package很轻松。
弱鸡的stat PhD只能去中西部药厂做stat scientist，一年10万都不到。
这还是纯stat PhD， biostat一不小心掉进个真的纯做生物的实验室，读出来最好最好
的也就是去药厂。 |

发帖数: 28562 | 39 现在红遍天下的光遗传学，大家（包括我）都认为是Stanford的Deisseroth创造的。但
是昨天我不小心看到了一篇新闻文章，才惊讶的发现其实最早做出来的，有可能是
Wayne State University的潘卓华。虽然他的投稿时间和Deisseroth的类似，但是因为
他是一个没有什么名气的学者，而且他的文章包装得不对，所以他的文章被百般耽误，
最后比Deisseroth的晚了一年才发表。
在2004年底潘就做出了和Deisseroth几乎一样的文章，除了用的细胞略微不同：他做的
神经细胞是从视网膜分离的，而Deisseroth 做的神经细胞是从大脑分离的。然后他把
文章陆续投向Nature, Nature Neuroscience,Journal of Neuroscience，却统统遭到
了拒稿。然后大半年之后，也就是2005年8月份，Deisseroth 的文章发表在Nature
Neuroscience上。潘得知之后，心都凉了。

发帖数: 1870 | 40 lz跟俺正相反，俺是坚决不找local工作，只投remote。
lz很幸运，Atlanta算比较大的job market了，起码俺知道BofA和SunTrust就一大堆lz
可以投的位置。问题应该不在此，毕竟公司都prefer local candidate，找local工作
总比找remote有优势。主要问题可能在于lz工作性质定位的问题，stats的工作现在就
比较难找，僧多粥少。不光科班stats master拿簸箕搓，俺知道很多很多生化类PhD都
捎带手拿个stats master。现在stats可谓臭大街了。lz又没有非academic相关工作经
验，就更难。如果着急进industry的话，能不能曲线救国先找找IT工作？
说一下俺的情况，仅供参考。俺stats＋cs master，十大商业银行四年analyst工作经
验。08年9月投出第一份resume到现在为止23个月，共收到22个不同职位总共40+次
phone interview，主要来自finance、insurance和online advertising行业，全都是
各种不同analyst或者statistici |
