因为我很想拿一个PhD in Biostatistics DEGREE，想毕业后去工业或者药厂找工作，
听说biostatistics 比 epidemiology 更好找工作一点。所以就要求拿个biostatistics 学
位。
选择一：是epidemiology 这个系的 director， 当地相关协会主席.因为我想拿degree of
Biostatistics,他提出方法是在biostatistics 系找一个mentor 来做我的co-mentor. 但是他
目前只会付我接下来一年的学费，一年后，我找了co-mentor （在他的guide下找到），学费
会由那个导师付。这个我很担心，怕会到时能不能找到愿意付钱的老师。
选择二：是生物系的老师，但是愿意和一个他常年合作的老师 （属于biostatistics

朋友的鼓励，可还在纠结中，所以来版上征求给位高人的意见。
先说下自己的情况吧，本人现在60名开外的医学院读博，第三年，夏天刚过qualifying
exam，应该算是PhD candidate吧。年轻的老板做蛋白结构，主要通过X-ray
crystallography，cryo-EM 以及tomography等手段。人很nice，手把手教解结构，用
电镜，不push，经常鼓励，实验室很轻松，基本是放羊。今年比较lucky，长了个晶体
，有篇8,9分文章待发。
考虑到自己对生物科研没有狂热的兴趣（只能说不反感做实验）和以后的出路，申请了
biostatistics，并收到了rank30左右一学校明年spring的offer，有意向转成PhD，或
以后申请PhD。按计划明年一月份就应该走了，也在九月份跟老板提了这事，他甚是惊
讶，挽留了好几次。说明理由之后，他表示理解，希望我过得happy，末了，给了我几
个选择，要么接着在实验是读博，四年毕业，同时在本校修个part time的

只有两三个据信.不管最后结果怎样，干等总是郁闷。
从ASA 网上看到了2008, 2009 department survey, 估计2009年有354 (s.e.=46) PhD
graduates from statistics 有 146 (s.e.=46) PhD graduates from biostatistics.
33% of the statistics Ph.D. went to tenure-track positions and 20% of the
biostatistics Ph.D. got a tenure-track position.
20% of each category went to post-doc training
所以光算均数，每年就有150个 fresh PhD 要找AP position. 在加上干了两年或以上
的 post-doc,再加上去年没有毕业今年毕业的，（到现在估计就100位置statistics+ |

不知道选那所好， boston 的是biostatistic 应该偏应用，rutgers 的statistic
program 好像很theoretically，但是统计排名很不错。 各位大侠帮忙出出主意吧。

In my opinion, ecnomics/finance major is better than biostatistics for PhD.
For master, finance >>> biostatistics > ecnomics.

Coask. How much CS technique you need to study biostatistics? I am
planning to apply Biostatistics and now I am taking some math and basic
statistics classes. Do i need to take some cs courses?
I tend to choose biostatistics just because I have been stayed in medical
area for about 8 years. Don't want to just give it up and step into an new
area. I studied public health in China for undergraduate and got biology MS
in US. Now i am working as technician. |

化学PhD，工作难找，在家带孩子好几年，现在准备重新读个master，本来是想读
Biostatistics，但是最近local想去的这个学校新推出了Health Data Science的方向
，现在比较纠结应该学哪一个方向。我数学还不错，但是编程方面完全没有基础，这样
是不是学biostatistics更容易上手？还有就是工作，毕竟学费挺高的，而且就是奔着
找工作去的，Biostatistics硕士和 Health Data Science硕士哪一个比较好找工作呢
？对我这种转行的来说 |
